EXCURSION
SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA - September, 23rd and 26th
Drive
to the Capital of Galicia, Santiago de Compostela "declared
as a World Cultural Heritage site", by UNESCO.
Santiago is a University and Cathedral city which enjoys a
cosmopolitan atmosphere without losing its traditions and noble
appearance. SANTIAGO is not just a city with monuments; the city
is a monument in itself.
Enjoy visiting Praza do Obradoiro (Workplace square), Hostal de
los Reyes Católicos, Pazo de Fonseca, the Praza das Praterias (Silversmiths'
Square), La Quintana Square and the many tiny medieval streets
of the city. At the Cathedral, we can witness the ofrenda (offering)
and the "botafumeiro", a huge Baroque censer whose
pendulum swings down the entire length of the transepts during
special ceremonies.
Departure from Santiago de Compostela to have lunch at Convento
de San Francisco. After lunch, return to Vigo.
EXCURSION
VIGO-PORTUGAL- September, 24th
Drive
to Baiona which has the oldest port in Galicia. There is a
replica of the caravel "La Pinta". It was also the
first place in Europe that learnt of the discovery of America.
Further along the Atlantic coast we reach Oia and La Guardia.
Visit to the well preserved Celtic settlement.
From the top of the mountain we can admire the impressive
lookouts over the Miño River. Further South across the border
to Valença do Minho, a fortress city dating from the 18th.
century with narrow streets lined with shops offering all kinds
of typical Portugues products.
Lunch at the Pousada de San Teotonio.
Later drive to Tuy whose legendary origin, is explained by its
privileged location on a hill next to the River Miño. Then
drive back to Vigo.
EXCURSION
TO THE SACRED VALLEY- September, 25th
From
the Middle Ages, the name of Rivoira Sacrata (Sacred Valley) was
given, due to the several monasteries settled there, to the area
which extends along the River Sil. Leaving Vigo on the highway
towards Ourense and further South to Esgos.
Visit to the ruins of the Galician oldest Monastery, dated from
the 6th. century, called San Pedro de la Roca. Further drive to
Luintra and San Estevo. Cruise on the Sil River with amazing
sceneries. Lunch at the Monastery of San Esteban Ribas de Sil,
which houses nowadays a brand new Parador (hotel owned by the
Spanish Government).
In the afternoon, drive to Ribadavia and walk along the medieval
streets of this typical village with it's excellent restored
Jewish quarter. Back to Vigo.
